Events in Japan

Southern Company leadership continues to monitor the recent events in Japan, and remains committed to completing the new Vogtle units on schedule and on budget.

"Our sympathies, our thoughts and our prayers go out to the people of Japan," said Southern Company CEO Tom Fanning. "Our company stands ready to assist in any way that we can. We're also continuing to track the progress being made there and are working closely with our industry peers to monitor any potential impact here."

Fanning emphasized that Southern Company remains committed to the Vogtle 3 and 4 project and the units' co-owners. He emphasized that the company does not anticipate the events in Japan to impact the construction schedule or the company's ability to stay on budget. As with every U.S. nuclear power plant, Southern Company's plants Farley, Hatch and Vogtle were designed, licensed and built to endure environmental hazards and disasters in meeting the NRC requirements.
