New Teacher Assistance Grants Georgia Power recognizes outstanding first-year teachers through the New Teacher Assistance Grants program. The grants provide teachers with funds to purchase classroom supplies.

Winning public school teachers are all graduates of state-approved teacher programs located at Georgia's public four-year colleges and universities. The winners receive a $1,000 grant, which they can use to purchase materials and supplies for their classrooms.

Georgia Power has been awarding grants to new teachers since 2004. Candidates for the grants are submitted by the deans of the state's public teacher colleges. A committee that includes the executive directors of education-related organizations and Georgia Power representatives selects the winners. Two-hundred new teacher grants have been awarded across the state of Georgia since 2004.

As part of the New Teacher Grant application process, letters are sent out to Georgia's public four-year colleges and universities that have state-approved teacher education programs. These institutions are asked to recommend up to ten candidates, 5 male and 5 female. Candidates must be in the top 25 percent of their class academically, possess an aptitude for teaching, and be recommended by education faculty members. Family members of officers or directors of Georgia Power are not eligible for the grant.

Supporting education is one of the priorities of Georgia Power. Georgia Power works closely with educators to help children and teachers in the classroom through a variety of initiatives and programs.

Gulf Power Safety City is Gulf Power's electrical safety program. Presentations include videos, handouts and conclude with a 20 minute demonstration using a ‘live-wire’ model of a neighborhood. The model enables us to safely demonstrate to the audience what happens when a person, vehicle, tree, or other item comes in contact with a power line. These demonstrations are typically presented to fourth grade students in schools served by Gulf Power, from Escambia to Washington County. However, we also offer tailored presentations to civic originations, emergency first responders, professional contractors and other public groups, who by the nature of their work may have potentially close exposure to our lines and equipment. For more information or to schedule a presentation call 850-444-6654 or send us an e-mail. Or visit Safety City online to learn more.

The titles of our four presentations and approximate class time are as follows:
The Shocking Truth – 1 hour, provided to area 4th graders and suitable for most school children
Contractor Beware – 1 hour, provided for professional contractors
Electrical Safety at Home and Work – 1 hour, provided for civic and community organizations
Recognizing and Avoiding the Hazard – 1 ½ hours, provided for First Responders
